成り立ち
スウィング・シティー・プロダクションの母体は2007年コロラド州デンバーで誕生。The Saturday Night Swing Danceという地元のスウィング・ダンスのイベント運営から始まり、熱心なファンを集めて2009年まで継続した。イベントコーディネーターのデイヴィッド・ガスティンは、その懐古現象から人々はより強力な「本物」感を求めているのではないかと考え、同イベントを開催することでその真偽を確かめた。その雰囲気が「本物」に近づくほど、イベント参加者がより楽しむ様を見て、彼の推測は正しかったことが証明された。
2010年、ガスティンは「ヴィンテージ・ムーブメント」の隆興に焦点を当てた。この年、イギリスにおいて、レトロ・ライフをテーマとしたフェスティバルVintage at Goodwood （現在はThe Vintage Festival）の始まりとともに、このムーブメントが起きた。ここでも「本物」の雰囲気が求められていることと、音楽が強く求められていることに気づき、MP3コンピレーションアルバム「This is Vintage Now」をプロデュース、スウィング・シティー・プロダクション名義で2011年にリリースした。アルバムは当時の新しいストリーミング・プラットフォーム、Spotifyで成功を収めた。制作中の次作「This is Vintage Now Vol.2」は、2021年にアメリカでのリリースを予定している。
スウィング・シティー・プロダクションは2012年にハリウッドに拠点を移し、2018年5月からアメリカ人レトロ・ジャズシンガー、ローラ・エインズワースの対日本市場プロモーション代理業を担う。レコードチェーン店ディスクユニオンにおけるアナログLP 「Top Shelf」の流通販売から始まり、2019年後半からラッツパック・レコードより流通販売を開始した。2020年3月、4月からローラの今までの作品すべてが日本全国のレコード店で販売されている。
スウィング・シティー・プロダクションは今後さらなるアルバムのリリースを予定しており、すべてのプロジェクトにおいて本物志向を第一に掲げ、活動を続けていく。
Swing City Productions is an American production house based in Hollywood, California. We currently distribute the music of jazz singer Laura Ainsworth to Japan, and are the producers of the This is Vintage Now compilation series internationally. Ratspack Records (Japan) is our exclusive Japanese distributor.
History
Swing City Productions began in Denver, Colorado in 2007, as the company behind a local swing dance event called The Saturday Night Swing Dance, which collected a devoted following and lasted until 2009. Event coordinator David Gasten suspected that there was a need for a stronger and more genuine atmosphere within retro/throwback culture, and utilized the Saturday Night Swing Dance to test his suspicions. He was proven right—the more genuine the atmosphere was, the more the attendees enjoyed themselves.
In 2010, Gasten shifted his focus to the rising Vintage Movement, which had a breakthrough year in the UK with the launch of Vintage at Goodwood (now The Vintage Festival). Again perceiving a need for more genuine atmosphere as well as a need for a stronger focus on music, Gasten produced the MP3-only compilation album This is Vintage Now, and released it under the Swing City Productions name in 2011. The album became a success on the then-new streaming platform Spotify. A follow-up compilation, This is Vintage Now Vol. 2, is in production with a slated American release of 2021.
Swing City Productions relocated to Hollywood, CA in 2012. In May 2018, the company began representing American retro jazz singer Laura Ainsworth for the Japanese market. They initially distributed her Top Shelf vinyl LP to the Disk Union record chain, and then connected with Japanese distributor Ratspack Records in late 2019. Ratspack Records will release Laura Ainsworth’s entire discography to record stores throughout Japan in March and April of 2020.
Swing City Productions has more album releases slated for production, and will continue to put authentic-feeling atmosphere first in all of its projects.
